vocal jazz charts

All of my published charts are currently available at http://anchormusic.com. There are more of my charts there that haven’t made it here yet. I will post additional charts on this site as I make more recordings. You might notice as you scroll down that I’ve done a number of arrangements of songs by Dave Frishberg. I love his songs and have made a project out of arranging those that I think are suited to a group format.

A Little Taste

Composed by Johnny Hodges and Dave Frishberg. This arrangement for SATB with rhythm section stays in the spirit of Frishberg’s original recording. The recording was done in a studio with both the choir and the rhythm section made up of students from Bowling Green State University.

Chega De Saudade

Composed by Antonio Carlos Jobim with lyrics by Jon Hendricks and Jessie Cavanaugh. This arrangement is for SATB with rhythm section. The recording was done in a studio with both the choir and the rhythm section made up of students from Bowling Green State University. The guitar solo is by Taylor Nelson and the piano solo is by Josh Silver.

Don’t Move

Composed by Bobby Sharp. This arrangement is for SATB with rhythm section, but it’s also available as SSAA. The recording was done in a studio with both the choir and the rhythm section made up of students from Bowling Green State University. The piano solo is by Josh Silver.

Heart’s Desire

Composed by Alan Broadbent and Dave Frishberg. This arrangement for SATB with rhythm section opens with a rubato a cappella section before going to a ballad tempo with rhythm section. This is a challenging but beautiful tune with a great lyric. The recording is live from the 2018 New York Voices Vocal Jazz Camp. The choir of campers learned the chart in a week and this is the performance from the Camp Finale concert.

Hold Me

Composed by Carol Welsman. This arrangement for SATB with rhythm section is a “funky samba” in the spirit of Carol’s recording. The recording was done in a studio with both the choir and the rhythm section made up of students from Bowling Green State University. The piano solo is by Josh Silver.

I’m Old Fashioned

Composed by Jerome Kern and Johnny Mercer. This arrangement is for SATB with rhythm section, plus four horns. There are also versions available with two horn parts (many different combinations). You could also do it with just rhythm section. The recording is live from a concert at Bowling Green State University and is the original version with four horns. The choir and rhythm section are all students. The horn players are a mix of students and faculty.

Peel Me a Grape

Composed by Dave Frishberg. This arrangement is for SATB with rhythm section, and is also available in SSAA voicing. This is one of Frishberg’s better known songs and it has been recorded by everyone from Anita O’Day to Blossom Dearie to Diana Krall. The recording was done in a studio with both the choir and the rhythm section made up of students from Bowling Green State University.

Poor Butterfly

Composed by Raymond Hubble and John Golden. This arrangement for SATB a cappella includes the rarely heard verse. The recording was done in my home studio one track at a time, Chelsea Cloeter singing soprano, Emily Georgeson singing alto, me singing tenor, and Joe Buzzelli on bass. (Joe also did the mix.) The vocal solo is by Emily.

I’m Always Chasing Rainbows

Composed by Joseph McCarthy and Harry Carroll. This arrangement for SATB with rhythm section is a fresh treatment of this old standard in that it fluctuates from 3/4 time to 4/4 time and makes use of four-against-three rhythms. It is also available in SSAA voicing. The recording was done in a studio with a student rhythm section from Bowling Green State University and professional and semi-professional (that’s me) singers. The piano solo is by Josh Silver.

Snowbound

Composed by Dave Frishberg. This arrangement for SATB with rhythm section has space for an instrumental (or scat) solo and a vocal soli before returning to the melody of the song. The recording was done in my home studio one track at a time, Chelsea Cloeter, Gina Buzzelli, Joe Buzzelli did the vocal parts with each of us singing two parts. Joe also did the mix. I played guitar, bass and drums. The piano part was generated from the score.

You Are There

Composed by Johnny Mandel and Dave Frishberg. This arrangement for SATB with rhythm section opens with a rubato a cappella section before going to a ballad tempo with rhythm section. The recording was done in a studio with both the choir and the rhythm section made up of students from Bowling Green State University. Piano solo by Matt Skitzki.

Zoot Walks In

Composed by Gerry Muligan, Zoot Sims and Dave Frishberg. This arrangement is for SATB with rhythm section and tenor sax soloist. Another instrument could be substituted for the tenor, but the tenor is preferred (for Zoot). The recording was done in a studio with the choir, the rhythm section and the soloist (A.J. Shank) all students from Bowling Green State University.
